Sproule logo

1951 – Sproule Was Founded in Calgary, Alberta

Sproule has provided energy and resource evaluation services since 1951. From its Calgary base, the firm built a reputation in Reserves and Resources Assessment, Technical Studies, and Expert work, expanding its offices to include Mexico City along the way. Over time, Sproule broadened its services beyond traditional oil and gas evaluation, adding M&A Advisory to its offering and, in the 2020s, expanding into Direct Lithium Extraction, an early signal of the company’s move into the wider energy transition.

Sproule’s expertise is still present across several of our business streams. Explore where its roots run deepest: Reserves and Resources, Technical Studies, and Expert and Advisory.

ERCE: Years of History with a New Name

ERCE logo

1977 – ERC and Equipoise Solutions: The Roots of ERCE

ERCE traces its roots to two pioneering UK consultancies: ERC (Energy Resource Consultants) and Equipoise Solutions. ERC was originally founded in 1977 by David Wilson and became the UK’s premier independent reserves evaluation company, helping shape the country’s reserves reporting regulations. After a sale to PGS in the 1990’s the brand was rebooted by David Wilson and Simon McDonald in the 2000’s, in response to market demand. Equipoise Solutions, founded in 1998 by Don Scott, Charles Wood, and Mark Holliday, became a leader in the shift from mainframe to desktop geology and geophysics software, as well as in unitisation and equity disputes. The two firms merged in 2010 to form ERC Equipoise, a fully integrated international subsurface consultancy, highly focused on Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. The company expanded into Asia Pacific with a Singapore office in 2015, rebranded as ERCE in 2018, and opened further offices in Perth, Australia, and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia between 2019 and 2022.

ERCE’s expertise continues to shape several core Sproule ERCE practice areas today. Learn more about the areas where ERCE is still alive: Reserves and Resources, Expert and Advisory, and Technical Studies.

How Seven Companies Are Now Sharing Expertise as Sproule ERCE

Sproule ERCE Heritage Timeline

Niven Fischer Joins Sproule: Expanding Asset Management Expertise

2017 - Niven Fischer United with Sproule

Calgary, Alberta, Canada

Niven Fischer joined Sproule in 2017. Founded in Calgary in 1998, the asset management firm offered turnkey asset management solutions across Western Canada. Its team covered land, engineering, operations, and accounting, including property administration, joint venture, and financial accounting, with occasional geological and geophysical support, specializing in asset management, evaluations, due diligence, and receivership management.

Once a part of Sproule, the Asset Management team won broader client exposure through Sproule's network, while Sproule gained a new, faster-growing service line that balanced its portfolio. Its people became the foundation of what is now Sproule ERCE's Asset Management practice area, a core service line today.

MHA Petroleum Consultants Joins Sproule: Strengthening Technical Expertise

2019 - MHA Petroleum Consultants Became Part of Sproule

Denver, Colorado, USA

MHA Petroleum Consultants joined Sproule in 2019, bringing decades of specialist subsurface engineering and geoscience expertise built since its founding in Denver in 1993.

In an early link between Sproule and MHA, Sproule's initial Denver office was sold to MHA back in 1996. Over the following decades, MHA built a strong reputation in expert witness work, government-funded research, industry training, and integrated field studies. Its reach was wide, with a base in the Rocky Mountains and California, and roughly half its work international, including assignments in the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, Austria, and Australia.

MHA became an industry leader in unconventional gas and enhanced oil recovery.

The acquisition in 2019 gave Sproule an immediate operating presence in both the United States and Australia. MHA's growing base of helium clients helped establish Sproule as one of the leading evaluators of non-conventional gas resources, including helium, CO2, and hydrogen. The MHA brand, contacts, and people were fully integrated into Sproule, and its heritage lives on today in two of Sproule ERCE's core practice areas: non-conventional gas evaluation (helium, hydrogen, CO2) and Energy Advisory, where Tim Hower's expert witness practice remains a core piece.

Veegeo Joins Sproule: Strengthening Geothermal Expertise

2022 - Veegeo Joined Sproule

Rotterdam, Netherlands

Veegeo became part of Sproule ERCE in 2022, a decade after its founding in 2012 as a specialist geothermal firm serving the Netherlands. The firm operated two specialist service lines: Geothermal Operations, focused on well delivery, project management and production management for greenhouse heating projects, and Geothermal Advisory, covering well innovation, technical due diligence and geohazard management.

The acquisition broadened Sproule ERCE's service offering into the fast-growing heat energy market and deepened the company's presence in Europe beyond its traditional oil and gas base.

Veegeo's expertise now underpins Sproule ERCE's geothermal services, including geoscience, geohazard management, technical due diligence, field development studies, Geothermal Resource Assessments (GRMS), and a range of strategic advisory services.

Horizon Energy Partners Joins Sproule: Expanding Global Subsurface Expertise

2023 - Horizon Energy Partners' Former Core Subsurface Team Joined Sproule

The Hague, Netherlands

Horizon Energy Partners' core subsurface team joined Sproule in 2023, acquired from SGS after 15 years operating as SGS Horizon and later as a part of SGS in their Subsurface Consultancy division. The team Sproule brought over covered the disciplines that were the heart of Horizon's original offering: geology, geophysics, petrophysics, and reservoir engineering.

Horizon was founded in the Netherlands in 2001 by three subsurface specialists. The firm delivered technical study work worldwide from early on. Horizon specialized in subsurface modelling, field development plans, unitizations and redeterminations, exploration studies, and reserves audits, certifications, and Competent Person's Reports. In 2008, SGS acquired Horizon, and under SGS, the business gained access to a much larger international network, landing major contracts in Kuwait, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Oman, and combining subsurface consultancy with SGS's laboratory capabilities for integrated studies including EOR and PVT evaluations.

Today, that team continues to serve Sproule ERCE clients with the same core disciplines it built its reputation on: subsurface modelling, field development planning, and technical studies work.

ERC Evolution: Focused Low-Carbon Solutions

2021 - ERC Evolution a Focused Team for Next Generation Energy

London, England, United Kingdom

ERC Evolution was launched in 2021 as ERCE's dedicated energy transition subsidiary, built to let a team focus on emerging fields of greenhouse gas emissions, climate disclosure, carbon capture and storage, direct lithium extraction and geothermal power. Operating as a separate entity let the team build new processes tailored to these industries, including ISO 14064-certified GHG emissions auditing, and to leverage the ERCE's legacy of subsurface, facilities and economic modelling, while developing new techniques and products suited to emerging industries.

As the market matured, ERC Evolution became heavily involved in project finance and regulatory disclosure processes for energy transition. It acted as the Subsurface Lender's Advisor in world class projects such as Northern Endurance and Hynet in the UK. It also published the first SRMS CPR in Europe for Harbour Energy.

Today, Evolution's skills live within Sproule ERCE's Low Carbon Solutions practice area, where the combination of Sproule's history of energy transition work has been combined with Evolution's, to form a world class offering spanning the globe.
