ERCE to Attend CCS Symposium on Characterisation and Monitoring of Containment
ERCE’s Ellen Mitchell, Managing Consultant, and Andy Moore, CCS Principal Engineer, will be attending the CCS Symposium: Characterisation and Monitoring of Containment, taking place from 11-13 September 2024. This year’s symposium is particularly important as it focuses on the increasing role of carbon capture and storage (CCS) in mitigating global warming, in line with the recommendations of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The emphasis will be on demonstrating the safety and effectiveness of CCS operations, both during and after CO2 storage, ensuring that carbon dioxide is securely sequestered for centuries.

Following the success of previous CCS conferences—covering workflows in 2022 and storage efficiency in 2023—this third Energy Group CCS symposium will delve into the critical areas of containment characterisation and monitoring. These efforts are key to optimising CCS field development and ensuring the long-term safety of CO2 storage.

The symposium will focus on two major categories:

1. Understanding the Storage Complex Prior to Project Commencement/Design Phase, which includes:
   • Geological seals around wellbores
   • Unconventional seals
   • The role of faults and geomechanics on containment
   • Geological and risk characterisation of sealing sequences
   • Basin to pore-scale geology and characterisation of seals and potential leakage features
   • Quantification of containment risk
2. Monitoring During Operational Phase Through to Long-Term Stewardship, including:
   • Baseline monitoring
   • Seabed monitoring
   • Low-cost geophysical monitoring
   • Non-geophysical monitoring technologies
   • Remote sensing
   • Monitoring tools on depleted fields
   • Monitoring case histories and strategies
