Techno-Economic Study for Pipeline Options

One of the main challenges in the CCS industry is the “chicken-and-egg” dilemma, where the capture, transport, and storage processes must align for a project to succeed. Often, the stakeholders involved in each segment of the chain lack the technical background to fully understand the risks and uncertainties outside their area of expertise. Sproule ERCE supported our client by providing a comprehensive understanding of the technical aspects related to the storage phase of the CCS chain.

Client Need:

Our client wished to understand which storage sites would be optional for their pipeline expansion plans to avoid committing capital to build transport infrastructure to stores which may not reach development or have issues once onstream.

Description of services provided by Sproule ERCE staff:

Sproule ERCE’s geoscientists, reservoir engineers, and cost engineers reviewed public data sources from government websites, databases and literature and entered our findings into our in-house screening tool. This tool accounts for capacity, injectivity, geological containment, wellbore containment, costs and facilities, and data coverage. We then presented an unbiased, quantitative comparison of the different storage sites to our client.
In addition, we compiled an education pack for non-subsurface professionals to better understand the technical aspects of carbon storage, and what they need to understand to be able to make an informed decision on the optimal storage site.

Outcome:

Deliverables included a management style presentation ready for communication to their key decision makers. We also provided a technical slide pack giving further details, and a supplemental education slide pack.
