Optimized Field Development Plans for Two Middle East Onshore Oil Fields
In preparation for a bid on the development of two onshore oil fields in the Middle East with billions of barrels of oil in place, an oil and gas company – looking to co-operate with a national oil company – needed to better understand the reservoir characteristics and opportunities that existed. The aim of the project was to create well-defined, economical field development plans, including detailed well schedules, ideal well locations and the most optimal IOR/EOR scheme for each field.

Sproule ERCE’s integrated team of geologists, geophysicists, petrophysicists, engineers and operations professionals enabled a robust evaluation from planning to field operations. Along the way, Sproule ERCE provided in-country knowledge transfer to the client’s team members.
Sproule ERCE created static and dynamic models for each field that included seismic interpretation, petrophysical analyses, discrete fracture network modelling, geological modelling, dynamic modelling and history matching of the models to available performance data from the fields.
Each model involved running a base case, infills case, ESP case and various IOR/EOR schemes, such as water injection, gas injection and water-alternating-gas (WAG) injection.
With calibrated 3D geostatistical models, Sproule ERCE conducted a significant number of forecast sensitivities to determine the best development plan for each field.
Despite similar geological ages of the reservoirs, their unique characteristics required very different development plans.
