Midstream and Facilities Decarbonization Roadmap
Sproule ERCE assessed a major midstream company’s full emissions portfolio, including a Marginal Abatement Cost (MAC) Curve Assessment. Using facility data reviews, site visits, and in-house expertise, the team identified decarbonization options, built OPEX and CAPEX models, and evaluated economic viability under current and future climate policies.
Project Highlights
- Established Verified Emissions Baseline and Industry Benchmarks
- Conducted On-Site Infrastructure Assessment
- Performed Marginal Abatement Cost (MAC) Curve Analysis Across Assets
- Delivered Tailored Decarbonization Solutions for Real Operations
Challenges:
Quantification of Emissions: Midstream companies struggle to accurately quantify emissions due to dispersed infrastructure, varying measurement technologies, and inconsistent data quality.
Emission Benchmarking: Setting fair emission benchmarks is difficult due to differences in scale, asset age, and location, as well as limited standardization and comparable peer data.
Regulatory Uncertainty: Shifting regulatory environment, with evolving federal, provincial, and international policies on carbon pricing, methane regulations, and reporting requirements.

Solutions:
Site Visits – On-Site Emissions Testing and Data Collection: Collaborated with a technical expert in emissions testing to conduct on-site emissions testing using optical gas imaging and flow meters, considering the asset's geographical location and footprint to identify opportunities for implementing future low carbon infrastructure.
MAC Curve Preparation: This assessment helps prioritize the most efficient emissions reduction strategies through a visual comparison of relative costs. This includes both negative and positive abatement costs.
Screening and Ranking Decarbonization Opportunities: Sproule ERCE’s decarbonization, facilities, and asset management experts align low-carbon solutions with client assets to cut emissions and improve efficiency, prioritizing options by implementation timeline and capital cost.

Values:
Integrated Assessment: Worked with industry professionals to carry out integral site visits to collect information for the client on operating assets, building out a client-specific emissions dataset.
Boutique Decarbonization Options: Leveraged knowledge of industry and regulatory landscape, utilizing PFDs, P&IDs and heat and mass balances from all facilities to highlight cost-effective and efficient implementation of technologies.
Financial Modelling: Sproule ERCE carried out project-specific costing, performing a MAC curve assessment for emissions abatement potential against all potential decarbonization solutions against the clients' facilities and infrastructure.
Aligning Emissions Strategy with Growth: Helped the client leverage Scope 2 reduction potential, assess Scope 1 abatement options, and align Cogen and CCS investments with economic returns, regulations, and evolving power supply emissions.
